I have taken a handful of days off from posting. We’ve had some good and bad days since my last post. Update on James: We have some good news about James. He has been doing better respiratory wise. His lung x-rays are still pretty foggy but clinically he is showing less symptoms. He was able to graduate off of the high frequency jet ventilator and now he is only on the conventional ventilator. The goal is for him to be off the ventilator and on CPAP (oxygen through the nose) by Friday. This is all good news and we are grateful he is doing better with this. Other good news…

The past couple of days have been reassuring and positive (knock on wood). Vera has continued to be very stable and James is improving in a few ways. Update on James: The past two days the doctors have actually said they haven’t had big concerns and James has been mostly stable 🙂 He still has some of a P.I.E. in his lungs, but it is improving. He also still has the small hole in his heart but he is not showing clinical symptoms of it anymore. We are mostly concerned about his brain bleed, but there is nothing we can do about it for now except for get weekly ultrasounds…

These past few days have been a bit of a roller coaster again. Vera is being a champ and doing well over all and James is still struggling with many complications, but he has had some successes. Jef and I are adjusting to a new schedule, as he went back to work this week. So far the plan is for him to work until about 3-4 each day and then come to the hospital right after and meet me there. This has been okay so far but I do miss having him with me. We also observed my first Mother’s Day this past Sunday. It was very bittersweet for me…

The past two days have been pretty challenging. Vera has been doing okay overall but James has been having a lot of scary complications. Update on James: James has been doing pretty well during each night, but has been having trouble in the mornings that then last most of the day. He has been having a lot of chest x-rays because he has been displaying symptoms of lung issues. We found out he has something called P.I.E. (Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema) in which there is an extra collection of air inside his connective tissues. He also has a bacterial infection from birth, Urea Plasma, which is effecting his lungs. On top…

Today was a pretty good day. Highlights were that I finally got to hold James (!!!) and Jef finally got to hold Vera 🙂 Update on James: James is still having some trouble keeping his oxygen levels down and has trouble handling stress. He luckily stayed pretty stable most of today and his levels only fluctuated a couple of times. We are hoping he stays stable through the night and tomorrow morning, as that is often when he has trouble. Since he was so stable today, I got to hold him for the first time. I was able to cuddle with him for about two hours. It was very special…

Yesterday and today had their ups and downs. Today was much better than yesterday. We are trying to not get our hopes up but we feel very grateful for the progress. Updates on James: Yesterday James had a rough day. He had to be given 100% oxygen at one point in the morning and was not handling stress well during diaper changes and check ups. He got a bit more stable throughout the day. Last night and today have been great for him. His chest x-ray looks a little clearer, he has been able to weaned down on the ventilator, and he did not get stressed out during his care…

Vera and James are one week old today! It is crazy to realize it has already, and only, been a week. We are so grateful that we have made it to this point, based on how they were brought into this world. Today was a mixed day with a lot of ups and downs. We were anxious already because we knew today was their first head ultrasound to check for brain bleeds. It was also overwhelming realizing a whole week had gone by. Update on James: James had a good night last night so we thought we’d start the day positively, but when we got to the hospital we found…

Today was another okay, mostly stable day. We are very grateful for that. Update on James: Overnight he was taken off of his back-up ventilator because the nurses thought he was strong enough to handle it, but he had trouble breathing like that so after a few hours he was put back on the back-up ventilator. His chest x-ray looked a little better again, which hopefully means his heart and lungs are improving. His blood pressure has also been better, and he has been off of Dopamine, which was helping his blood pressure. He is still on Ativan to help his stress levels during procedures and care checks. He is…

Today was a overall a better day compared to yesterday. Update on James: James had to get his first blood transfusion today because his Hemoglobin was low. That was scary but he didn’t have a reaction and it ended up helping his blood pressure. James was able to be weaned completely off of his Dopamine, which was helping his blood pressure. He still has a large hole in his heart that is being treated with Tylenol. His chest X-ray looked a bit better today. The Tylenol may be helping him already. His oxygen levels are better today and he is doing better on the ventilator. So, a much better day…

We are already on day 5 of our NICU stay. Time has gone fast and slow at the same time…this has all been very surreal and doesn’t feel like it actually happened. I feel that it is a miracle to even have gotten this far given the circumstances of how this all started.  Here is an update on how the babies are doing: James has been having a challenging time breathing and keeping his blood pressure up. He is struggling a bit overall. It is weird for me because when the two of them were in the womb, James was the one that seemed stronger and the one I felt…
